The idea for Check-In started in a small group chat between friends who wanted to stay consistent with their workouts. Every day, we text in the chat what we did: “Chest day/4miles ✅,” “Cold plunge ❄️,” “Sauna 🔥.” Over time, this organic routine turned into an unspoken commitment and motivation. Each message was a tiny promise to show up.
The core concept is simple: take the energy of a motivating group chat, and build an app around it while being scalable, gamified, and beautifully designed.
The concept behind Check-In emerged from a simple insight - people are more likely to stay committed to their goals when they’re not doing it alone. But most habit trackers are solitary, overly structured, or uninspiring. We wanted to create a system that feels as effortless and engaging as checking in with a friend and spend max 2m a day on the app instead of doomscrolling.
Check-In allows users to form or join groups for nearly any purpose. it could be daily workouts, morning routines, meditation, creative practice, or recovery milestones. Each “check-in” logs your activity using customizable tags (like "chest day," "sauna," or "reading"), with a visual streak system and encouragement from peers. Think of it as a scoreboard for self-improvement.. but with a social twist!
In developing Check-In, I prioritized a clean, modular interface that highlights consistency over perfection. The user experience was built around three core principles:
Clarity: A minimal yet vibrant UI that clearly displays user check-ins, group activity, and streak progression.
Modularity: Each tag, group, and goal is customizable which allows users to tailor the platform to their lifestyle.
Positive reinforcement: Visual feedback, emojis, and group validation creates a loop of motivation and camaraderie.
The backend was designed to support group creation, tagging logic, user levels, and historical tracking. The front-end showcases progress in an intuitive and visually satisfying way.
The first version of Check-In was prototyped with a focus on daily fitness accountability. Through iterative feedback, I plan to expanded it to include broader wellness and lifestyle categories.
With the current rollout, my goal is to build a positive, gamified culture of showing up but not just for yourself, for everyone!
